Anti-apartheid rap ยท Cape Flats English & Afrikaans
Story, bloodline and 4 names

South African hip hop began on the Cape Flats as explicitly anti-apartheid organising. Prophets of da City and Black Noise were making records that got banned by the state before the ANC was legal, which makes Cape Town one of the earliest political rap scenes anywhere outside New York.

Joburg took the baton commercially. Motswako โ€” Setswana and English mixed in the same bar โ€” gave the north its own flow, kwaito ran in parallel as the township's own dance music, and by the 2020s amapiano had made South Africa a net exporter of rhythm again.

Cape Flats crews toured north through the 90s and left a scene behind them. Joburg then mixed it with kwaito, which had grown up alongside from house, not from rap.

Japan got hip hop through record shops and the Shibuya import trade, and gave two things back: an obsessive DJ and crate culture, and Nujabes, whose Samurai Champloo scores introduced millions of people outside Japan to instrumental hip hop.

Gully rap came out of Dharavi and Kurla โ€” DIVINE and Naezy rapping in Hindi and Mumbai street slang about the chawls they lived in. A Bollywood film built on their story turned it national in 2019, and Indian rap is now a mainstream commercial genre in several languages at once.
